3 Ways to Avoid Needing an Car Accident Lawyer
How to Avoid Car Accidents While Driving
Many of the cases that a car accident lawyer deals with involve accidents while driving – and many of these could have easily been avoided. We’re all fully aware of the road rules; no speeding, no using mobile phones, no drinking, and for the most part, we abide by these rules to avoid receiving a ticket. However, a driving accident could obviously result in something much worse; injury, or worse still, death. Therefore, it’s important to understand how to avoid accidents and how to make sure you’re not putting your life and the lives of others in danger.
1. Become a Defensive Driver
You’ll never be able to control the actions of others, especially while out on the roads but you can certainly be prepared for them. Even if you’ve already passed your test, a defensive driving course can still be beneficial to your skills – and a small price to pay for a lifetime of safer driving. You might already know all there is to know about road rules, traffic and parallel parking, but a defensive driving course can teach you more about what to do when things don’t go to plan. For example, if a car swerves towards you, or you slip on the roads during rain, what would your reaction be? If you’re not prepared for such events, it’s easy to panic and this is when accidents can occur.
2. Keep Your Car in Perfect Condition
Many driving accidents occur when the car itself hasn’t been looked after. Whether the brakes or tires were faulty, or lights weren’t working… anything that makes the car less than 100 per cent roadworthy is an accident waiting to happen. And if you’ve had an accident involving a less-than-roadworthy vehicle, your case suddenly loses all credibility, leaving you with potentially hefty medical bills as well as driving fines to pay. Most car dealerships will give you a guide on when to bring your car in for a check up, generally based on the number of miles you’ve driven. Try to stick to this guide and bring your car in for servicing when needed – it could save your life one day.
3. Avoid Distractions
As we all know, talking or texting on a mobile phone (unless it’s with a hands-free device) is illegal while driving, due to the distraction it causes. But what’s not mentioned in this rule is the infinite number of alternative distractions that can just as easily cause an accident while you’re driving. For example, eating in the car can be a major distraction, especially if you’re eating something that requires the exclusive use of your hand, such as a burger. It’s also quite a common occurrence for working women to put their makeup on in the car during traffic. While this may seem like an effective way to save time, it’s also very dangerous – and the extra 10 minutes it takes at home to do your makeup will seem irrelevant if you one day cause yourself an accident because of this.
